Grapes - Table

TABLE GRAPES

Grapes – colors of red, purple, rose, green and gold – large and small shapes, round and long. Grape vines grace walls and arbors and their leaves lend drama and fall color to the landscape. Choose a grape variety for your climate and particular purpose. The table grapes we carry fall into two main categories – European, and American/American hybrids .The latter varieties are the most cold hardy. Canadice, Concord Seedless, Himrod , Interlaken, and Venus are all seedless. Excellent table grapes, most of these are also suitable for juice, jelly, raisins and wine. The seeded varieties such as Concord, Golden Muscat and Niagara have distinct flavors and are often used in wine-making.

Most of the European varieties we offer are seedless. Black Monukka is the hardiest of these; the grapes are large, purplish-black. Two of the most commonly grown grapes, Thompson Seedless and Flame, require hot summers to ripen. Try Perlette and Ruby if you live in a cooler summer area.

Kyoho is one of the most popular table grapes in Japan. The large, black fruit has an unusual white, waxy finish; the grape is very sweet and juicy. Ladyfinger is an old-time elongated variety which still has a large following here on the Central Coast. Suffolk Red Seedless is an unusual cross between an American and a Russian variety. It needs less heat than most European varieties and can withstand lower temperatures to -10 degrees All the grapes we offer are grown on their own rootstock; they are all self-fruitful and require very little chill.

There are many ways to train grapes; the two most common methods are spur pruning and cane pruning. Grapes are produced on stems that are developed on one year old wood. In order to produce high-quality fruit, it’s important to learn the proper pruning techniques. We suggest consulting a book on pruning or, if you’re lucky enough to find one, a local authority. The Sunset Western Garden Book has some very good tips and illustrations for grape pruning..

Powdery mildew is a fungal disease which generally affects European types. Sulfur dust is the recommended control; apply when the shoots are 6” long, again when 12” and then every two weeks until harvest.

Grapes are a refreshing snack or dessert with lots of health benefits. They are a high source of fiber, vitamin A, C and K plus calcium, iron and amino acids. Many physical trainers recommend drinking grape juice before a workout to help lessen muscle fatigue and soreness.

Most commercial growers use various chemicals in grape production to increase the size of the fruit. Growing your own grapes allows you to harvest an organic crop, which is often much tastier than the inflated sized grapes found in the supermarket.
